Our Favorite Indian Mutter Paneer

Mutter Paneer is a North Indian dish made of peas ('mutter') and Indian cheese ('Paneer'). The dish goes best with Indian roti, paratha, tandoori, or naan, although it tastes equally good as a side dish for rice, pulao, etc. The following recipe will serve 5-6 persons and takes about forty minutes for preparation and cooking.

  1. 1 lb. paneer cubes
  2. 1 cup fresh green peas
  3. 1 cup chopped onion
  4. 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  5. chili+ ginger paste
  6. dash of turmeric powder
  7. 3/4 teaspoon red chili powder
  8. 2 stalks coriander, finely chopped
  9. 1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder
  10. 1 tablespoon oil
  11. salt to taste
  12. 1 teaspoon Malai (milk cream)
  1. Preheat oil in a cooking bowl and add the onions, coriander, turmeric, red chili powders, and the chili-ginger paste and sauté the whole for 5 minutes.
  2. Add tomatoes and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  3. Let the paste turn into a gravy and add the peas then, and cook for 6-7 minutes.
  4. Add water, paneer cubes, and malai, and let the whole thing simmer for another 10 minutes.
  5. Turn the heat to low for the last process.
  6. Season with garam masala powder and a bit of malai.
